The department's SWAT and crisis negotiation team went to the Winslow Hotel just off Route 3 around 9:50 a.m. Sunday.

They'd been alerted by the Smyth County Sheriff's Office that Andrew Wyble, 25, had been staying there, Detective Lt. Vincent Auteri said.

Wyble -- who most recently had a Bloomingdale address -- was wanted for an attempted homicide from late last month, he said.

Authorities in Smyth County also said he may be suicidal.

The tactical units were dispatched given the circumstances, Auteri said.

Wyble initially refused to come out, then surrendered without incident after about 15 minutes -- with the letters "WAKS" scrawled on his foreheard.

He was sent to the Bergen County Jail to await extradition proceedings.

Police found the 9mm handgun in Wyble's room after obtaining a search warrant.
